Youbou

" There is more than a verbal tie between the words common, community, and communication. "

John Dewey

The lakeside community of Youbou is located on the shores of Cowichan Lake, 38 kilometres west of Duncan. Youbou is home to 1,450 permanent residents.

Originally called Cottonwood, Youbou was established in 1907. The railway arrived in Youbou as promised and a large sawmill was constructed. The town was renamed after the general manager and president of the original company that owned the mill. The mill was replaced by an even larger one in 1927. The Youbou mill was one of the oldest mills in British Columbia before it closed in 2001.

Cowichan Lake is 30 kilometres long inviting all manner of water sports in Youbou. There are several challenging hiking trails in the nearby mountains.

Youbou has basic services. There is an elementary school, church, small grocery store, gas station, liquor store, and a community hall. Youbou has a pub and a diner to choose from. Most services can be obtained in Lake Cowichan or nearby Duncan.
