Ucluelet

" Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community. "

Anthony J. D'Angelo

Ucluelet is nestled in a protected harbour on the Wild West Coast of Vancouver Island, 100 kilometres west of Port Alberni. Ucluelet has been home to the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations for thousands of years and is presently home to 1,980 permanent residents.

Ucluelet, which translates to ‘People of the Safe Harbour’, was first settled in the 1870’s by fur traders searching for a sheltered harbour. By the 1890’s settlers began arriving with the promise of a road from Port Alberni. They would have to wait another 60 years before that promise was fulfilled. Although the area was only accessible by boat, Ucluelet flourished with logging, fishing, processing plants, and canneries. During WWII there was a seaplane base, now Ucluelet Water Aerodrome, and a military land base, now Long Beach Airport.

Tourism is now the primary industry in Ucluelet with up to one million visitors annually. Ucluelet is located by Pacific Rim National Park and just to the south is Barkley Sound and the Broken Islands, home to some of the best diving and kayaking in the world. There are plenty of hiking trails including the Wild Pacific Trail, and opportunities for golfing, beachcombing, fishing, surfing, whale watching, and storm watching. The Ucluelet Aguarium is unique in that all creatures at the Aquarium are returned to the ocean at the end of the season.

Ucluelet is one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in Canada. It is a full service community with all levels of school including a college, churches, medical, dental, and all the conveniences.
