Tofino

" When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect. "

Aldo Leopold

Tofino is located on the Wild West Coast of Vancouver Island on the Esowista Peninsula in an area known as Clayoquot Sound, recently designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Clayoquot Sound has been home to the Nuu-Chah-nulth First Nations for 10,000 years. Tofino is presently home to 1,900 permanent residents.

The Esowista Peninsula was first settled in the 1850’s. The coastal community of Tofino was established in 1909 on the northern tip of the peninsula. The area was only accessible by boat. The primary industries, like most of the West Coast, were logging and fishing. In 1959 a road was finally constructed from Port Alberni to Tofino, and a trickle of tourists began arriving. In 1970 the Pacific Rim National Park was created and by 1972 the road to Port Alberni was paved. Tourism then began in earnest.

Today Tofino receives up to one million visitors annually. But they are not the only visitors. The annual gray whale migration passes by Tofino. The area is also a major flyway for birds. Hundreds of thousands of shore birds follow behind the gray whales on the way to the Arctic. Tofino is considered the Surf Capital of Canada and has some of the best surfing in the world. There is also hiking, biking, golf, beachcombing, fishing, and kayaking. There are 35 kilometres of sandy beaches, including the famous Long Beach, to explore. Fantastic storm watching makes Tofino a year round destination.

For many years Tofino has been one of the fastest growing communities in British Columbia. It is a full service community with the exception of no high school. Tofino has its own hospital, there is full health care, and there are numerous galleries, shops, and services to meet all your needs. Long Beach Airport services Tofino and Ucluelet. There is also a public market in the summer months.
