Sproat Lake

" There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about. "

Margaret J. Wheatley

Sproat Lake is located on the highway to the Pacific Rim, only 13 kilometres northwest of Port Alberni. Sproat Lake is home to the Klehkoot First Nations.

Sproat Lake has been home to the only two Mars water bombers left in the world since 1960. These planes, with 200 foot wingspans, are capable of scooping up 27 tons of water from the lake’s surface. They are used to fight forest fires throughout BC. Robertson Creek Hatchery is one of the most successful on Vancouver Island, producing 10 million salmon and trout annually.

Sproat Lake has over 450 kilometres of shoreline, most of which is still forested. There are three provincial parks around Sproat lake providing plenty of hiking and biking trails. Be sure to hike to the famous petroglyphs in Sproat Lake Provincial Park.

Sproat Lake produces some good sized rainbow and cutthroat trout. Sproat Lake is know for its warm waters and is a popular summer destination for all water sports including diving, water skiing, tubing, kayaking, swimming, and windsurfing.

Services around Sproat Lake are very limited. There is an elementary school, a couple of pubs, cafe, marina with marine fuel, and small grocery store with liquor outlet. All the services one would require can be obtained in nearby Port Alberni.
