" The impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbour. "
Hubert Humphrey

Malcolm Island is located north east of Port McNeill and is accessible by ferry. Malcolm Island is the home of the ‘Namgis First Nations and 886 permanent residents.

Malcolm Island was first settled in 1901 by a group of Finnish settlers looking to create a communal cooperative society. The rich Finnish heritage of these early settlers can still be seen in the charming seaside village of Sointula, which translates to “Place of Harmony”, and the lasting efforts of a cooperative society. Sointula has many cooperative enterprises and non-profit organizations including the oldest co-op store in the province and the Living Ocean Society, Canada’s largest non-profit organization focused on marine conservation issues.

The main industries on Malcolm Island have always been logging and fishing. As resource based industry wanes, determined Islanders have added tourism with whale watching, fishing charters, and wilderness tours. Malcolm Island lies directly in the path of migratory salmon routes providing some of the best sport fishing in the world. Small wonder that orca whales call Malcom Island home, with their rubbing beaches at Bere Point Regional Park at the north end of the island. There are great hiking, cycling, and kayaking opportunities on and around Malcom Island.

There are basic services in Sointula. There is an elementary school, church, credit union, medical clinic, gas station, and a museum. There is, of course, a seafood shop. Sointula has a vibrant arts community with many galleries and studios to discover. During the summer months there is a farmers market. There is also a coffee shop, restaurant, and pub.
