Sayward

" How does one keep from growing old inside? Surely only in community. "

Robert McAfee Brown

Sayward is a valley of spectacular beauty just 75 kilometres north of Campbell River. Sayward was home to the Lekwiltok First Nations for thousands of years, and is presently home to 1,500 permanent residents. The area known as Sayward is comprised of Kelsey Bay, the Village of Sayward, and the Sayward Valley.

Sayward was first settled in the 1890’s. Logging and fishing were the primary industries. The lush, fertile valley supported agriculture as well. A wharf was constructed in 1926. The only access to Sayward was by water until a road was constructed after WWII, finally connecting Sayward to Campbell River. Sayward served as the ferry terminal and the trading centre for the north central coastal communities until 1978. The road from Sayward to Port Hardy was paved and the ferry terminal was then relocated to Port Hardy.

Tourism is a growing sector in Sayward and not surprising. The Sayward Valley is several kilometres long and has everything to offer the outdoor enthusiast. There is mountain climbing, white water rafting, scuba diving, horseback riding, fishing, hiking, biking, whale watching, wildlife viewing, skiing, snowboarding, caving, and golf. Some of the largest trees in the world are located in nearby parks. The Salmon River has the best steelhead fishing on Vancouver Island. The Salmon River Wildlife Reserve is a 52 hectare park, perfect for bird watching. The Kelsey Bay Harbour is the only small craft harbour between Campbell River and Port McNeill.

There are basic services in Sayward. There is an elementary school, a church, medical clinic, doctor, convenience stores with liquor outlets, gas station, gift shop, library, community hall, and a full service recreation centre with indoor swimming pool. There are a growing number of artisans in the area. There is a farmers market in the summer and fall months. There are several restaurants and pubs to choose from.
