Saturna Island

" There is more than a verbal tie between the words common, community, and communication. "

John Dewey

Saturna Island is the most easterly of the Gulf Islands. It was the seasonal hunting grounds of the Tsawout and Tseycum First Nations for thousands of  years. Saturna Island is home to 350 permanent residents.

Saturna Island was settled in the late 1800’s. It was one of the last of the Gulf Islands to be settled due to its isolation and rugged terrain. At one time there was a sawmill, sandstone quarry, and a coal mine on Saturna Island. Farming was a mainstay and, like many of the islands, orchards flourished. Feral goats and sheep can still be found on Saturna Island, descendents of the early settlers livestock.

Saturna Island can be accessed by BC Ferries, water taxi, or float plane. It is the most pristine of the Gulf Islands and the Gulf Island National Park Reserve encompasses most of the southern part of Saturna Island. The mountainous terrain makes for some great hiking trails. There are four public beaches for swimming. Fishing, boating, and kayaking, whale watching, and wildlife viewing can be enjoyed on the waters surrounding Saturna Island.

Services are minimal on Saturna Island. There is an elementary school, church, medical clinic, grocery store with liquor outlet, gas station, hardware store, bakery, gift shop, numerous art studios, and a library. There are several cafes, restaurants, and pubs to choose from.
