Salt Spring Island is located off the east coast of Vancouver Island. Salt Spring Island is the largest and most populated of the Gulf Islands. It is home to the Salishan First Nations and 10,500 permanent residents. 

Originally called Admiral Island, Salt Spring Island was first settled in 1859 by ex-slaves with little in the way of skills or tools. But they managed to survive with the abundance on and around the Island. At one time there was logging and fishing. But farming has proved to be the mainstay of Salt Spring Island. At one time the fruit business was booming. By the 1930’s the first wave of tourists began arriving on Salt Spring Island, Followed by a wave of artists in the 1960’s. 

Today, Salt Spring Island represents the quintessential West Coast lifestyle and is populated by an eclectic creative group of entrepreneurs, farms, artists, musicians, and writers. Salt Spring Island is famous for its Saturday market. Studio tours are a popular summer activity as is hiking, biking, boating, kayaking, fishing, and beachcombing. 

Salt Spring Island is serviced by BC Ferries from Swartz Bay as well as Tswassen. Salt Spring Island has all the services one would require including their own small, rural hospital. The library is the largest volunteer run library in Canada. Organic farming is the norm on Salt Spring Island with many offering farm gate sales.
