Read Island

" Being involved in the well-being and advancement of one's own community is a most natural thing to do. "

Clarence Clemons

Read Island is located off the east of Vancouver Island near Campbell River and is home to 65 permanent residents.

Read Island was first settled after the turn of the century when it was gifted to a young British couple as a wedding present. They then decided to leave the comfort of their life in Britain for a new one on Read Island. Unable to have children of their own, tragic circumstances found them responsible for the care of their neice and nephews. They gifted small parcels of land to young families willing to settle on Read Island in order to establish a schoolhouse for their new wards. That one room schoolhouse still operates today. It is quite a sight to see school children arrive from the surrounding Discovery Islands on all manner of boats each school day.

The primary industries on Read Island are tourism, aquaculture, fishing. Part of the Discovery Islands Group, Read Island is 40 square kilometres. There is no ferry link.

There are plenty of opportunities for kayaking, fishing, diving, whale watching, and wildlife viewing.

There are minimal services on Read Island. There is the one room school house, a general store, community centre, and Canada’s only floating post office.
