The seaside town of Qualicum Beach is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, 12 kilometres west of Parksville. Qualicum Beach is home to the Pentlatch First Nations and 8,900 permanent residents.
Qualicum Beach was first settled as a lumber town in the 1880’s. A road was built in 1894, connecting Qualicum Beach to Nanaimo. By 1914 the railway had arrived and with it the first droves of tourists that have been coming to Qualicum Beach ever since.
Qualicum Beach is predominantly a tourist and retirement town, having the oldest population in Canada. There are several golf courses in the area, the first one was built in Qualicum Beach in 1913. There are six provincial parks in the area for hiking, biking, and horse back riding. The nearby salmon, steelhead, and trout hatchery on the Qualicum River ensures great fishing for years to come. Qualicum Beach is also a popular destination for windsurfing and kayaking.
Qualicum Beach is a full service community including its own airport, theatres, and museums. There is a farmers market in the summer and fall months. Qualicum Beach has a thriving arts movement.
