Protection Island

" We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community. "
Cesar Chavez

Protection Island is a small beautiful island located in Nanaimo Harbour, just a 10 minute boat ride to downtown Nanaimo. Protection Island is home to 325 permanent residents.

Protection Island was settled in the late 1800’s. The coal mines on the Island had mine tunnels that stretched out in to the Nanaimo Harbour. Protection Island was also home to the terminus for cruise ships in the early 1900’s.

Today this quaint low key Island is strictly a residential community, home to an eclectic group of authors, artists, and musicians. Access is by a small privately owned passenger ferry. Residents get around the Island by walking or with golf carts. Protection Island is a great jumping off point for kayaking, fishing, or diving. There are hiking trails on Protection Island or you can walk across to Newcastle Island at low tide and explore the Newcastle Island Provincial Park.

Protection Island has the modern conveniences one would expect in the city – water, sewer, hydro, phone, and high speed internet. There are no services on Protection Island with the exception of Canada’s only floating pub and restaurant, a museum, and a community centre.
