Powell River

" Interest and enthusiasm are the wellspring of continually evolving community life. "

Henning Hansmann

Powell River is located on the northern section of the Sunshine Coast. Powell River has been home to the Tla’Amin First Nations for thousands of years and is presently home to 13,200 permanent residents.

Powell River began as a logging camp in the 1880’s. By 1908, a pulp mill was being constructed that would eventually become the largest pulp mill in the world for a time. Powell River was a preplanned community and was constructed at the same time as the mill to house the millworkers and provide for their needs. The original town, known as Townsite, is still intact thanks to years of effort by dedicated volunteers and now has a Natural Historic designation. Within Townsite is Canada’s oldest continuously operated movie theatre that began showing films in 1913. The millworkers formed the first credit union in BC in 1939.

The arts and tourism are the primary economic driver in Powell River today. This is evident in part by Powell River being known not only as the Cultural Capital of Canada but also the Dive Capital of Canada with over 100 dive sites in the local waters. Powell River has the mildest climate in Canada. Combined with specatular scenery it is small wonder that Powell River is also a popular destination for boating, kayaking, hiking, biking, golfing, wildlife watching, beachcombing, and fishing.

Powell River is a full service community with all levels of schools including a Vancouver Island University campus, a modern hospital, a first class recreation complex, and its own airport. There are numerous art galleries, studios, museums, and historic sites to discover.
