Metchosin

" If you feel rooted in your home and family, if you are active in your community, there is nothing more empowering. "

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Metchosin is located south west of Victoria and is part of the Western Communities. Metchosin has been home to the Scia’New First Nations for thousands of years and is currently home to 5,300 permanent residents.

Metchosin has been settled by independent farmers since the 1840’s. Race Rocks Lighthouse was built in 1861 and was one of the first lighthouses on the West Coast. Several defence batteries were established in Metchosin during WW II. Today those sights are home to the Albert Head Air Cadets and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets training centres. This international college builds bridges of understanding between people from different countries and backgrounds.

The word Metchosin translates to “Place of Stinking Fish”. The First Nations story goes that a dead orca whale washed up on shore and lay rotting for a long time. The smell of rotting fish spread for miles and that area became known as Metchosin. Today, the community symbol is the orca. Metchosin is a nature lover’s paradise, and is known for its many parks and winding country roads. Part of the Galloping Goose Trail travels through Metchosin. This 100 kilometre multi use trail connects Victoria to Sooke. Metchosin is home to the popular Witty’s Lagoon Park. It has some great walking trails that take you to the sea and a great sandy beach.
