Jordan River

" When our community is in a state of peace, it can share that peace with neighbouring communities. "

Dalai Lama

Jordan River is located 70 kilometres southwest of Victoria, half way between Sooke and Port Renfrew.

Jordan River was established as a logging camp in the late 1800’s. By the early 1900’s Jordan River was a thriving community. The road was finally extended from Sooke, connecting Jordan River to the rest of Vancouver Island. Before that Jordan River was only accessible by sea. The hydroelectric power plant that services Victoria today was being built on the river. There was also a copper mine that began operations in the 1920’s. There were over 1,000 men working in Jordan River.

There is not much evidence left of this boom town. Today, Jordan River is a popular place to surf, beach comb, or hike. There is newly established Jordan River Regional Park Reserve, a 2,350 hectare park. Just to the west of Jordan River is Botanical Beach and Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, home to the Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, a 47 kilometre wilderness hiking trail.

There are minimal services in Jordan River. There is a cafe, fish and chip shop, and a corner store. Nearby Sooke has most services and amenities one would require.
