James Bay

" How does one keep from growing old inside? Surely only in community. "

Robert McAfee Brown

James Bay is the oldest neighbourhood in Victoria. For that matter, it is the oldest neighbourhood on the West Coast north of San Francisco. For thousands of years it was the home of the Swenghwung First Nations, now known as the Songhees First Nations. Today James Bay is home to 11,000 permanent residents.

James Bay began as a farming community in the 1840’s. The neighbourhood grew as industry expanded. By the late 1800’s there was quite a bit of industry in James Bay. A furniture factory, a soap factory, flour mill, chemical plant, several marine related industries including a ship yard, and a steam ship terminal which is now home to the Royal London Wax Museum. A grass roots effort in the 1960’s saved many of the heritage homes that belonged to the original settlers. Most of them have been restored including the Emily Carr House, birthplace of one of Canada’s best known and loved artists.

Many people think James Bay is a sleepy residential community. Far from it. James Bay is home to the BC Parliament Buildings, the Royal BC Museum, and the Ogden Point Cruise Ship Terminal. James Bay is home to the Ogden Point Dive Centre, one of the finest dive facilities in BC. One can wander down to Fisherman’s Wharf, an eclectic live aboard marine community.

There is so much to see and do in James Bay. Stroll along the seawall and wander out the Ogden Point breakwater. Stroll through the gardens at Beacon Hill Park. Go on a heritage walk and view some spectacular heritage homes. There are several championship golf courses nearby. There is plenty or retail therapy opportunities in James Bay, including their Saturday summer market, or in nearby downtown Victoria.

James Bay has most of the services required including schools, churches, grocery stores, medical and dental clinics, gas stations, restaurants, pubs, cafes, and bakeries.
