Galiano Island

" When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect. "

Aldo Leopold

Galiano Island is located north east of Salt Spring Island. At 57 square kilometres, Galiano Island is the 2nd largest of the Gulf Islands. It has been home to the Penalakut First Nations for several thousand years and is today home to over 1,200 permanent residents.

Galiano Island was first settled in the mid 1800’s. Industry was primarily logging and fishing. In the late 1800’s, the Japanese established a saltery and cannery on the Island. When the Japanese were interned during World War II, the business collapsed.

Today the primary business of Galiano Island is tourism with a healthy mix of artists and writers.

There is so much to see and do on Galiano Island. There is no less than seven parks including Bluff Park, a 130 acre park established by the community. Golfing, tennis, fishing, kayaking, whale watching, and biking to name just a few. There are numerous hiking and walking trails throughout the Island. Try beachcombing on any one of the beautiful white shell beaches. Renting a moped is a fun way to explore the Island. There are several public wharves providing safe moorage. In spring, Galiano Island is a birder’s paradise with over 150 species of birds making their home on the Island or passing through.

There is a surprisingly substantial array of services on Galiano Island considering the population. There is a community school as well as the renowned Gulf Islands Film and Television School. There is a church, gas station, a health clinic that provides a full range of services, no less than three grocery stores, two liquor outlets, museum, hardware and building supply store, a farmers market, book store, library, and numerous shops, studios, galleries, cafes, restaurants, and pubs. There is, however, no bank on Galiano Island, only an ATM.
