Gabriola Island

" We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community. "

Cesar Chavez

Gabriola Island is one of the Gulf Islands and is located 5 kilometres east of Nanaimo. Gabriola Island is home to the Snuneymux First Nations and 4,500 permanent residents. In the summer months the population of the Island almost doubles.

Gabriola Island was first settled in the mid 1800’s by coal miners that worked the mines in Nanaimo. Farming expanded to feed the population of Nanaimo. In the early 20th century there was an active brickyard that operated until the 1950’s. Today many of the residents commute to Nanaimo to work.

Not only famous for its petroglyphs, Gabriola Island is home to Canada’s only full time traditional wooden boat building school. Boating is a popular past time as evident in the fact that Gabriola Island has not one but three marinas. There is a beautiful nine hole golf course on the Island. There are three provincial parks to explore. Biking around the island is a must. Beachcombing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, and diving are just a few of the activities available.

Gabriola Island is almost a full service community. There is an elementary school, several churches, full health care, credit union, and a gas station. There is also a grocery store, garden nursery, theatre, museum, farmers market, and many shops and businesses that support the Island community.
