Deep Bay

" Being involved in the well-being and advancement of one's own community is a most natural thing to do. "

Clarence Clemons

Deep Bay is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island approximately 40 kilometres south of Courtenay. This oceanside community is part of the area known as Lighthouse Country and is home to 500 permanent residents.

Deep Bay was originally settled in the mid 1800’s. Attracted by the deep and sheltered bay, a fish cannery was established that ran successfully for many years. Today, Deep Bay is still home to fishermen as well as shellfish farmers and a cluster of artisans. Deep Bay is proud to be the home of the Vancouver Island University’s Deep Bay Marine Field Station.

Deep Bay is the winter feeding grounds for many species of birds and is an excellent destination for bird watchers. In the summer, the Deep Bay Spit is a popular place for swimming. Other activities include caving, fishing, golfing, hiking, kayaking, sailing, and scuba diving.

Services in Deep Bay are minimal. There is a government wharf with a full service marina including gas bar. There is also a full service grocery store and cafe.
