" For a community to be whole and healthy, it must be based on people's love and concern for each other. "

Millard Fuller

Crofton is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island, 16 kilometres north of Duncan. This seaside town, nestled on the shores of Osborne Bay, is home to the Halalt First Nation and 2,500 permanent residents.

The area was first settled by homesteads and farms, and then the town of Crofton was founded in 1902 by Henry Croft. Copper was discovered on Mount Sicker and Henry Croft developed a large copper mine. When the railway could not keep up with the ore he was supplying, Mr. Croft built a smelter on the coast to refine the copper himself. Like many communities, Crofton struggled during the depression. Attracted by the deep sea bay, a pulp and paper mill was built in 1957 and it is still operating today.

There are some great trails on Mount Richards or Maple Mountain for hiking. There is golfing, biking, and fishing. Crofton has built a 1 km long seawalk from which to enjoy an afternoon stroll. Or explore the surrounding countryside looking for art studios or farm gate sales. The nearby Chemanius River has some wonderful swimming holes. The original Crofton schoolhouse is now a museum. Or take the BC Ferry from Crofton over to Salt Spring Island for the day.

Services in Crofton are minimal. There is an elementary school, dentist, grocery store, and gas station as well as an auto repair shop, coffee shop, hair dresser, and cold beer and wine store. There are a couple of restaurants and a pub to choose from. By the highway is a great farmers market. Duncan is close by to meet all the service and business needs you might have.
