" If you feel rooted in your home and family, if you are active in your community, there is nothing more empowering. "

Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Coombs is located 9 kilometres west of Parksville and is the gateway to the Alberni Valley and the Pacific Rim. This small agricultural community is home to 1,000 permanent residents.

Coombs was settled in 1910 as part of the Salvation Army’s immigration program. The town was named after the Canadian Commissioner at the time, Captain Thomas Coombs. Best known for its “Goats on the Roof” country market, this clever marketing idea spurred an explosion of tourist driven businesses over the years, making Coombs one of the top destinations in British Columbia.

There are seven provincial parks within 30 minutes of Coombs providing you with plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Not to be missed are the hikes to the falls in Englishman River Provincial Park and Little Qualicum Provincial Park, or caving at Horne Lake. If you are looking for some retail therapy Coombs is a great place for day tripping, exploring all the shops, galleries, studios, heritage buildings, and antique hunting. You will soon find, however, that one day is just not enough. Coombs is a great family destination with an amusement park, butterfly gardens, parrot rescue, and of course there is always something going on at the rodeo grounds all summer long.

Coombs is a tourist driven community and has very little in the way of services for its permanent residents. Parksville, Qualicum Beach, and Nanaimo are all close by to provide all the services required. Coombs does have a general store, a liquor store, a church, a seasonal grocery store, and a veterinary hospital. There are several cafes, restaurants, and there are also several light industrial and manufacturing businesses.
